In the last decade, continual record-breaking auction prices for whisky and wine have been well reported and this trend does not seem to show signs of stopping, such is the thirst for quality-aged spirit and well cellared wines.
A Buoyant Market
From single rare bottlings, to bonded casks and original Chateau cases, the spike in International buying has positioned both wine and whisky as attractive investments and collectible commodities. At the top of the market, connoisseurs are paying more for the sensory experience of a rare and complex drinking experience that has the ability to conjure up distant memories from the kaleidoscope of aromas emanating from the glass.
Indeed, many bottles hiding away at the back of the family drinks cabinet are now highly sought after. A Macallan 10 year old from the 1990s is now worth over £300. And for those lucky enough to have bought a cask of Macallan in the 1990s, a return on the investment can be exchanged for impressive sums of around £50,000 to £250,000.
For wine, Bordeaux vintages from renowned Chateau’s continue to dominate the collecting field. Our recent online sale of a private collection of cellared wines, saw 100% of lots sold, and highlights included a case of the highly sought-after Chateau Mouton Rothschild 2000, achieving an impressive £15,000.
