Footnote
Makuzu Kozan, also known as Miyagawa Kozan, was a potter from Kyoto who set up a workshop in the suburbs of Yokohama in 1871 to produce ceramics for export to Europe and North America. His vases with their high-relief modelling and use of bright colours and gilding, are classic examples of Japanese export products made to appeal to the Victorian taste. An example of Kozan's work, with high-relief decorations, is in the Ashmolean Museum, accession no. EA2008.65
