We were delighted to present Lalique | A Private Collection of Scent Bottles to auction in February 2022. The diversity of form, colour and techniques featured in this single-owner collection were a testament to René Lalique's artistic genius.
In February 2022, Lalique | A Private Collection of Scent Bottles, presented a single-owner collection of perfume bottles designed by René Lalique. The sale comprised 150 lots with estimates ranging from £300-30,000.
One of Lalique’s neighbours was Francois Coty, the perfumer, and he invited Lalique to design bottles for him. This was revolutionary as before this, scent was acquired in phials from the pharmacy to then be decanted into generic dressing table bottles at home. However, Lalique created bespoke perfume bottles and in so doing established a precedent for future commercial perfume bottle presentation and packaging.
While Lalique designed bottles for himself and Coty he also created bottles for houses including D’Orsay, D’Heraud, Roger & Gallet, Arys, Molinard, Houbigant, Forvil and Worth, and department stores such as Saks of New York and the Grand Magasin Du Louvre in Paris too.
The diversity of forms, colours, motifs and techniques Lalique employed in creating these bottles is testament to his artistic genius and his understanding of his chosen material – glass.
