We are proud to present An Aesthetic Interior: The Contents of a London Apartment, a fine collection of works of art held in an exquisite interior within a magnificent London apartment designed by Richard Norman Shaw.
The collection forms part of our two-day DESIGN Since 1860 auction taking place on 16 & 17 October, with the collection offered on Wednesday 16 October (Lots 1 - 148).
This remarkable setting serves as the backdrop for a meticulously curated period interior, where each element has been thoughtfully placed to fulfil a specific role in the overall design. The collection is a tangible reflection of the renewed interest in early Decorative Arts that began in the 1960s and continues to thrive today.
The works, which are diverse and captivating, span from the mid-19th century into the 20th century, encompassing embroideries, ceramics, furniture, stained glass and other works of art from the Gothic Revival, Aesthetic, and Arts & Crafts movements. The design elements feature many of the leading figures of the late 19th century, including Christopher Dresser, W.A.S. Benson, and Morris & Co., alongside pioneering ceramic makers such as Minton, Doulton, William De Morgan, and the Martin Brothers.
Also included in the collection offered in our October action are a selection of paintings that harmonise beautifully with the objects, reflecting the owner's deep appreciation for the period, the natural world and international culture.
