Note:
The design of this table is similar to the dining table from Blair Castle, sold in these rooms 14th March 2012, lot 292, except that the present lot has the addition of a chamfered moulding on the legs and castors to the feet. The Blair table was similar to one supplied by Gillows to Hugh Montgomerie, 12th Earl of Eglinton, for Eglinton Castle, Ayrshire, circa 1800 and now in Dumfries House. The same pattern was also made for Bellamour, Staffordshire in 1798 by cabinet-maker George Atkinson, who executed a number of similar dining tables for Gillows between 1790 and 1802.
For a five pedestal table with similar legs, see Sotheby's London, 5th Jun 2007, lot 140. A six pedestal example with similar legs and attributed to Gillows was sold by Christie's London, 11th May 2005, lot 40.
