In this theatrical composition Mackie portrays the Venetian Gothic-style Doge’s Palace in Venice. His use of broad planes of colour is believed to have been inspired by his contact with the work of Paul Gauguin and Paul Sérusier, whom Mackie encountered in France in 1891.
