Celebrated for her jewel-toned still lifes and sensitive landscapes, Mary Armour's work is instantly recognisable. Her mature style developed during a tenure teaching still life painting at Glasgow School of Art between 1951-61, where she was exposed to modern European artistic ideas. This inspired her subsequent work profoundly. Armour frequently journeyed to the West Coast of Scotland with her husband and fellow artist William Armour, where the pair drew and painted the landscape.
