Doris was one of the jewels of 1920s and ‘30s London society, and her paintings embody the spirit of the ’bright young things'. The use of space, and the interest in the the personality, lifestyle and dress of the riders in Summer Afternoon suggest that Zinkeisen was drawing upon her experience as a mural painter and theatrical designer when composing this charming scene.
