Footnote
Heraldry:
The Arms of Campbell
The armorial bearings as engraved are those of the family of Campbell. They may be blazoned as follows:
Arms: Quarterly of 1st and 4th Gyronny of eight or and sable (for Campbell) 2nd and 3rd Argent a lymphad her sails furled and oars in action all sable flag and pennants flying gules (for Lorn)
Crest: A boar’s head erased or (for Campbell)
Motto: Ne Obliviscaris [Do not forget]
The marshalling of the arms and the use of the crest is that used by the Campbells, Dukes of Argyll, but without the incidents of peerage (i.e. coronet of rank and supporters). Given this fact, it is most likely that this is an example of a gentleman bearing the name of Campbell who caused the arms and crest of the Argyll Campbells to be engraved upon this tray most probably without authority.
