Upon the balance of probability and without any evidence to the contrary these armorial bearings commemorate the marriage of Richard Maunsell (born circa 1748 died ……?), of Queensboro in the County of Limerick and Rebecca Smith (born circa 1754 died ……?). Richard was the second son of Richard Maunsell, of Ballywilliam, Rathkeale in the County of Limerick and his wife, Helena Maria Toler, whilst Rebecca was the daughter of Nicholas Smith, of Castle Park, near Limerick in the same county. Richard and Rebecca were married at Limerick on the 1st April 1774. It is recorded that they at least had seven children during their marriage – four sons and three daughters all of whom appear to have lived into adulthood and married except for one son and one daughter.
Richard descended from John Maunsell (died November 1543), of Chicheley in the County of Buckinghamshire. His great grandson, Thomas Maunsell (born 17th April 1577), of Vandy in the County of Buckinghamshire and of Mocollop in the County of Waterford and of Ballyvillane in the County of Cork settled in Ireland in 1609. As an aside, Thomas was by training a barrister, but he also served in the English fleet during the Spanish Armada of 1588.
