Tallow is the rendered fat of cattle and sheep, and a chandler is a maker and seller of candles. A guild for the Tallow Chandlers in Dublin was founded in 1583 and granted a royal charter in 1674.
It is recorded in the Dublin City Archives that a John Whitemore, Tallow Chandler, received the Freedom of the City by service in midsummer 1697. A Christopher Inch, Weaver received the Freedom at Christmas the same year by Act of Parliament and a Joseph Sothern is recorded as being christened at St Michan, Dublin on the 12 March 1652 and married at the same church in 1678.
