Footnote
Note: Erskine Beveridge (1803-1864), father of the Scottish historian and antiquary of the same name (author of North Uist: Its Archaeology and Topography, 1911), founded Erskine Beveridge and Co. Ltd. in 1832. The business became the largest linen manufacturer in Dunfermline and was to expand into North America in the early part of the 20th century. The architect, civil engineer and surveyor, John Sang (1809-1887), also hailed from Fife, although one of his major contracts involved working on the York to Peterborough railway. The Dictionary of Scottish Architects also records Sang working in Inverness and Skye.
