"My most recent work consists of a contemporary landscape that evokes memories of the past… used stones are an image that I use as a symbol of technology created by civilizations throughout time." – Osamu Kojima
Osamu Kojima’s work is deeply influenced by memories, nostalgia, and personal musings. While his imposing and arresting ceramic sculptures show clear influence sourced from the natural world, his pieces are also products of humanity and the landscape of our society. Kojima was born in Fukui in 1973 and studied at the Kyoto Seika University in Kyoto then the Tainan National University of Arts in Taipei where he honed his craft, and continues to live and work today.
Kojima has been working with clay for almost twenty years, developing a practice that involves building compositions in clay that connect to his personal lived experiences. His application of clay, glass, and glaze contribute to deliberately blur the boundaries between the organic and the man-made – which further enhance the dialogue between nature and humanity. There is a clear interest in tension in Kojima’s work, which is rooted in the artist’s interest in the gravitational force of his sculptures and how best to create a sense of harmony and balance between the tension of opposing materials.
Kojima’s piece Nostalgia 10-TW-04 perfectly exemplifies his interest in this conversation between the human experience and the natural world. The title highlights a sense of a memory, while the thoughtful combination of stoneware and glass illuminate a composition that is evocative of a natural landscape that one might encounter in the world. This striking piece is typical of Kojima’s work and affirms his position as a highly coveted force within the contemporary craft movement.
