Footnote
Note: Jelly moulds of this type were made throughout the 1780s and into the early 19th century. They are known as core moulds and came in two parts, an undecorated outer portion and an inner decorated core. The outer section would be embedded in sand and filled with clear jelly, before the inner core was inserted. When the jelly had set the outer section was removed and the inner core, with a coating of jelly magnifying the decoration, was sent to the table. It is thought that some of these moulds may have been decorated at Wedgwood's Chelsea decorating studio by ex-Chelsea painters who were taken on by Wedgwood when the factory closed in 1769.
