Note:The development of Hunter's painting of still-lives followed anyhing bu a straight line. His early Dutch inspired black background works and the late loosely structured compositiions in which form and paint are handled in a fluid, almost liquid manner serve as identifiable post and antequem. The intervening decade however is not so clear-cut. The strong, bright colours of this still-life and its flattened perpespective suggest a date of c.1923-25. The familiar studio motifs of pink roses lying at the foot of the lug-handled bronze vase and the famille-rose bowl tipped up to reveal and orange and lemon tend to confirm this.
