Footnote
A comparable Burmese parabaik, dated to 1870s–1880s, from the Court of King Mindon or Thibaw, or associated workshops, is in The Metropolitan Museum, accession no. 2017.209. There are notable similar scenes in this parabaik, compared to the lot offered here. For example, the tiger and elephant fighting scene, the cock fighting scene, the procession scenes with elephants and gilded carriages, etc. According to the catalogue, the painting style was developed in the reign of King Mindon and continued under King Thibaw. It displays a hybridity born of traditional Burmese religious narrative painting blended with European pictorial devices.
