NOTE: The design of this chair is taken directly from Chippendale's 'The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director', plate XVII. The style is termed for the scrolls that are carved to appear like interlacing ribbons and is closely related to the French Rococo aesthetic, frequently incorporated by Chippendale into his work. Contemporary realisations of the ribband-back designs are much less common than others from Chippendale's Director due to the technical skill required for the intricate carving. Most surviving examples date from the later nineteenth century when Chippendale's style came back into fashion.
