‘I’m inviting people to explore the conditions of their own living’. – Antony Gormley, 2022
The stance of the figure in ‘Sensing’ suggests a state of suspension; the spectral ochre pigment implies an emanation beyond the confines of the human body. Antony Gormley is one of Britain’s leading contemporary artists, whose work interrogates the relationship between the body and the space it occupies. Gormley is best-known for his sculpture, but throughout his career he has also produced drawings and paintings as a vital part of his practice. He thus joins a rich tradition of sculptors who were also talented and prolific draughtsmen, and whose drawings enabled meditations on form that could then be transposed into three dimensions. Gormley’s works on paper are often rendered with watercolour as well as more experimental substances including chicory coffee, aniline dye, shellac and blood, each imparting a unique quality to his quality of line.
Antony Gormley received the Turner Prize in 1994 and has been a Royal Academician since 2003. His work is represented in important collections internationally.
