Edinburgh: James Donaldson, August-December 1777. 4to (29 x 21.5cm), contemporary marbled boards (binding broken), containing 41 semiweekly numbers, each 8 pp., and 2 ‘Edinburgh Advertiser Extraordinary’ numbers, 2 pp., contents including numerous reports from the American War of Independence e.g. ‘Mr Washington, with his army, we hear, is encamped on the heights between New German-town and the river Schuylkill, a few miles from the city of Philadelphia' (No. 1441), shipping notices (principally for merchantmen bound from Leith to the West Indies, including Kingston, Savanna La Mar, Grenada and Tobago, each signalled with small ship woodcut), notices of land sales, stolen property, escaped prisoners and similar, trade and bookseller advertisements, book extracts (e.g. ‘The Rural Industry and Oeconomy of the Chinese … by the Abbé Raynal’), and more, 1424 and 1438 each with extensive repaired tear to one leaf
