Alexander Tweedy is a Consultant Specialist and Head of Sale in African & Oceanic Art, Antiquities, and Natural History at Lyon & Turnbull. Since joining the firm in 2017, he has been instrumental in establishing the Ancient Art Department, helping to develop its reputation within the industry.
A graduate of the University of Nottingham, Alexander began his career as a specialist art researcher with the internationally renowned dealers ArtAncient and Clive Loveless. His work has facilitated the acquisition of significant pieces by major institutions, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Alexander has overseen the sale of numerous landmark works, most notably the Cobham Hall Roman busts, which achieved a record-breaking £1.7 million at auction. He works extensively with private collectors and institutions, both in the UK and internationally, advising on insurance valuations, acquisitions, and collection management.
Beyond his work at Lyon & Turnbull, Alexander is a member of the Treasury Valuation Committee for the British Museum, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland and serves as an expert witness on the Reviewing Committee on the Export of Works of Art and Objects of Cultural Interest (RCEWA), advising the UK Government on the export of culturally significant artefacts.
